Watch out
- NCIC also takes complaints about ethnic discrimination at work, in joining organisations and in sharing out public resources, not just hate speech.
- Hate speech is a crime: up to KSh 1 million in fines, up to 3 years in jail, or both.
- The Commission can also turn down complaints that are frivolous or better handled by a court. It must tell you within 60 days.
- Reply when the Commission asks you for something. If you don't respond for 12 months, it can dismiss your complaint for good.
- Hate speech meant to stir up ethnic hatred is a crime: up to KSh 1 million fine, 3 years in jail, or both. Report it to the police too.
Who can apply
- Any person or group who faces discrimination or harassment because of ethnicity, race or religion. You can also report something that doesn't affect you directly.
