Transfer a learner to another school (NEMIS/KEMIS)
Ministry of Education · sources read 30 Sep 2026
As the parent or guardian, put your request to transfer your child in writing. By law, transfers of learners are approved by the County Director of Education, and your child's NEMIS record, tied to a unique learner number, follows them.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- At your child's current school, with approval from the County Director of Education. Records are kept on the Ministry of Education's NEMIS/KEMIS system.
What you need
- A written transfer request from the parent or guardian
Steps
- Write a transfer request as the parent or guardian and hand it in at your child's current school.
- The transfer is approved by the County Director of Education, so follow up with the school or the county education office until it is approved.
- The schools record the move: every school must keep a register of learners' transfers.
- Check with the new school that your child is registered on KEMIS, the Ministry's learner system. Registration and verification of all learners on KEMIS is mandatory.
Watch out
- A school can't force you to move your child to another school without written approval from the County Director of Education.
- Your child's record on NEMIS is linked to one unique number, so the new school should pick up the same record, not create a new one.
Who can apply
- A learner can be transferred when the parent or guardian asks in writing, on medical grounds, or because of insecurity or a natural calamity
