What you need

  • Your National ID number (Kenyan citizens)
  • Your exam index number, exam type (KCSE or KCPE) and exam year
  • An email address you can open (for the one-time code)

Steps

  1. Go to knec.ac.ke, click E-Certificate, then Sign Up as an Applicant using your name and email. Enter the code sent to your email.
  2. Fill in your profile with your details exactly as on your National ID. The system checks them against the national population register.
  3. Click Generate E-Certificate and enter your index number (not your ID number), exam type and year.
  4. Pay through eCitizen (M-Pesa or another option). Once payment is confirmed, download your certificate as a PDF.
  5. Need to prove it to an employer? Click Send verification report and enter the employer's details. The report goes straight to them.

Watch out

  • You can download a generated certificate for 6 months. After that you have to pay again for a fresh copy, so save the PDF somewhere safe.
  • If the ID check fails, make sure your name and date of birth match your National ID exactly.
  • Paid but it still says Pending Payment? Click "Already paid? Check status now" instead of paying again.

Who can apply

  • Anyone who sat KCSE or KCPE from 1989 onwards.
  • Employers, universities and other organisations can open a Verifier Organization account to check certificates.
