Kenya National Examinations Council · sources read 30 Sep 2026

For a lost or damaged certificate, KNEC issues an Examination Results Certification Letter. Apply online on QMIS (qmis.knec.ac.ke), pay KSh 5,220 by M-Pesa once KNEC verifies your documents, then collect the letter in person at KNEC.

Fee
KSh 5,220Examination results certification letter (per letter, VAT inclusive)
How long
About 15 working days once all requirements are met
Where
Online on KNEC's Query Management Information System (QMIS), then collect in person at KNEC
Go to KNEC

What you need

  • A copy of the lost certificate or your result slip (for primary, result slips only count from 2013 onwards)
  • A police abstract showing you reported the certificate lost
  • A copy of your national ID or passport (under 18: birth certificate plus a parent's or guardian's ID copy)
  • A confirmation of your identity from the Registrar of Persons
  • One colour passport-size photo
  • If you changed your name: the legal document used, e.g. marriage certificate or the Kenya Gazette notice

Steps

  1. Go to QMIS (qmis.knec.ac.ke), register and log in, then choose Lost Certificate (certification letter).
  2. Upload copies of all the required documents and submit. KNEC then verifies them.
  3. After verification, the system sends you a unique paybill and account number. Pay the amount shown by M-Pesa.
  4. When you get an SMS that it's ready, go to KNEC with your original ID or valid passport and collect the letter yourself. A minor comes with a parent or guardian carrying their original ID and the child's original birth certificate.

Watch out

  • The names on your ID, passport or birth certificate must match the ones you used in the exam. A sworn affidavit is not accepted for a name change.
  • The certification letter itself can't be replaced once issued, so keep it safe.
  • Collect it within 2 years of applying. After that it's destroyed and the fee isn't refunded.

Who can apply

  • Anyone who sat a KNEC exam and has lost or damaged the certificate.
