National Transport and Safety Authority · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Kenyan licences come in categories: A for motorcycles, B for cars (B1 automatic only, B2 manual or automatic, B3 taxis), C for trucks, D for vans and buses, E special professional, F for drivers with disability and G for plant machinery. Each has its own minimum age.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Through a licensed driving school and the NTSA service portal (eCitizen login)
Steps
- Pick the category for what you'll drive. For an ordinary car, B2 lets you drive manual and automatic; B1 is automatic only.
- For trucks and buses, check the age and experience rule: C1 needs two years on B2, C needs two years on C1, and D2 and D3 need three years in the category below.
- Then apply for that category through a driving school and the NTSA test. Machinery (G) is endorsed on your existing licence.
Watch out
- A B1 (automatic) licence does not allow you to drive a manual car.
- Most truck and bus categories have a maximum age of 65.
- Drivers with a disability use category F and need a medical certificate and a disability assessment report.
Who can apply
- Moped (AM) from age 16; most motorcycle and car categories from age 18; taxis (B3) from 21.
