Find your child's KNEC assessment number and check registration (CBA portal)

Kenya National Examinations Council · sources read 1 Oct 2026

Your child's assessment number comes from the school: the head teacher registers the learner on the KNEC CBA portal in Grade 3 and must give you a registration slip with the number. With that number, you can check the registration on the CBA Parent Portal (cba.knec.ac.ke/parent-portal) using a code sent to your phone.

Fee

Where
Your child's school (for the number), then online on the KNEC CBA Parent Portal (cba.knec.ac.ke/parent-portal)
Go to KNEC

What you need

  • The learner's assessment number and one of the learner's names
  • Your phone number or ID number, as the school recorded it in the CBA portal

Steps

  1. Get the assessment number from your child's school. The head teacher must issue a registration slip with it after registering the learner.
  2. Open cba.knec.ac.ke and choose "Login as Primary & Junior School Parent/Guardian" (the Parent Portal).
  3. Enter the assessment number, one of the learner's names and your phone or ID number, tick the privacy notice and press Search.
  4. Enter the 6-digit code (OTP) sent to the parent phone number. You will then see the learner's school, grade and registration status.

Watch out

  • If your phone or ID number is not in the CBA portal, the code will not reach you. Visit your child's current school to have your details updated.
  • A school must not withhold a learner's assessment number. KNEC treats that as a registration malpractice.
  • KPSEA and KJSEA are free for Kenyan citizens: the Government pays. Non-citizens pay a fee set by KNEC.

Who can apply

  • Every learner in primary school, registered at Grade 3. The same number is used for the learner's whole basic education.
  • Parents, guardians and learners can confirm KPSEA (Grades 4-6) and KJSEA (Grades 7-9) registration on the CBA portal.

Common questions

Can I search a KNEC assessment number by name?

No. The Parent Portal needs both the assessment number and the learner's name, so the name alone isn't enough.

Where do I get my child's assessment number?

From the school: the head teacher must give a registration slip with it.

When is the assessment number given?

Primary learners must be registered at Grade 3, and that number is used throughout basic education.

How does the KNEC Parent Portal work?

Search first, then verify the 6-digit code sent to you to see your learner's school and registration status.

What if my phone number isn't on the CBA portal?

Visit your child's current school so they can update your details.

Can a school refuse to give me the assessment number?

Withholding a learner's assessment number is listed as a registration malpractice.
