Get a mains water connection from your water company (any county)
Water Services Regulatory Board / county water service providers · sources read 4 Oct 2026
Apply to the licensed water company (water service provider) for your area, not to WASREB. Its connection fee and deposit are in its gazetted tariff, which you can open from WASREB's register of licences and tariffs.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- At your area's licensed water service provider (county water company). Find it and its tariff on WASREB's register.
Steps
- Find your water company on WASREB's register of licences and tariffs (wasreb.go.ke/my-tariffs) and check its licence is valid.
- Open its gazetted tariff and look under 'Miscellaneous Charges' for the new water connection fee and deposit.
- If you are building, give the water company your plumbing and sewer plans to approve before you start work.
- When the works are done, the water company inspects them and certifies them for connection to the mains.
Watch out
- Never connect yourself or use a 'fundi' connection the company did not approve. An illegal connection is an offence, and you also pay the full value of the water plus 12% interest a year.
- Where a house connection isn't possible (e.g. informal settlements), water kiosks must not charge more than the lowest household rate.
- If the water company doesn't sort you out, you can complain to WASREB.
Who can apply
- Anyone in the area of a county-owned water service provider. Water services are a county function.
