What you need

  • Export: a recommendation to export food from the county government where your premises or factory is
  • Export: your food hygiene licence
  • Export: the invoice, and a certificate of analysis where it applies
  • Import: the invoice, a certificate of analysis and a packing list
  • The extra permit for your product, e.g. a fisheries or dairy permit, a veterinary certificate, a KEPHIS phytosanitary certificate, or a fumigation certificate for used clothes

Steps

  1. First get the permit your product needs from its own agency (for example Fisheries, Dairy, Veterinary, Tea or Coffee Board, or KEPHIS).
  2. For a food export, get a recommendation to export from your county government and make sure your food hygiene licence is valid.
  3. Log in to the KenTrade Single Window and apply for the Port Health certificate, attaching the common documents plus your product permit.

Watch out

  • The common documents are needed on top of your product's own permit, not instead of it.
  • Importing cereals, grains or fruit needs a lot: a phytosanitary certificate, a fumigation certificate and a non-GMO certificate from the country of origin, plus a KEPHIS plant import permit.

Who can apply

  • Exporters of food such as fish, milk, meat, tea, coffee, eggs, honey, cereals, fruit, vegetables and other manufactured food.
  • Importers of food and chemical substances, including cosmetics, chemicals and used clothes, shoes and bedding.
