Get a wiring (electrical installation test and completion) certificate

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority · sources read 4 Oct 2026

Hire an EPRA-licensed electrical contractor to wire your premises. They give Kenya Power a commencement notice before work, then a test and completion certificate when it's done, which Kenya Power needs before it connects you.

Fee
We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
Where
Through an EPRA-licensed electrical contractor (check EPRA's Electricity Registers at epra.go.ke). The contractor submits the certificates to Kenya Power through the shared Kenya Power/EPRA portal.
Go to EPRA

What you need

  • Commencement of work certificate from your licensed contractor (needed with the Kenya Power application)
  • Installation test and completion of work certificates from the same contractor (after you pay the Kenya Power quotation)

Steps

  1. Pick an electrical contractor on EPRA's list of licensed electrical contractors (Electricity Registers page).
  2. Before starting, the contractor submits a commencement notice to Kenya Power (or to EPRA where Kenya Power doesn't supply the area).
  3. The contractor wires the premises, tests the installation, and issues the commencement, completion and test certificates for your internal wiring.
  4. The wiring certificates are submitted electronically through the portal shared by Kenya Power and EPRA, so there's no paper certificate to carry around.

Watch out

  • The same contractor must submit both the commencement notice and the completion certificate, unless EPRA gives special permission. Don't switch electricians halfway.
  • As the owner, you commit an offence if you let unlicensed wiring be done on your premises. The fine is up to KSh 30,000, or up to 3 months in jail, or both.
  • For supply above 1,000 kVA you also need high-voltage test results from a Class A1 or B contractor.

Who can apply

  • Anyone getting a new Kenya Power connection. The wiring and certificates must come from a registered electrical contractor licensed by EPRA.
