Get an EPRA electricity generation, distribution or supply licence

Apply on the EPRA online licensing portal, attach the required documents and also deliver three hard copies to EPRA's offices. The application fee is KSh 10,000, then a grant fee and annual fee based on size (for generation, KSh 10,000 and KSh 5,000 per MW), and EPRA aims to decide within 60 days.

Steps
- Go to the License Application page on www.epra.go.ke and click Apply Now to open the licensing portal.
- Fill in the application for your type of undertaking and attach all the documents EPRA asks for.
- Pay the KSh 10,000 application fee.
- Deliver three hard copies of the application to EPRA's offices.
Watch out
- To sell power to Kenya Power you also need a power purchase agreement (PPA), which EPRA must approve.
- Distributors, including off-grid mini-grids, need EPRA approval for the retail tariffs they charge customers.
- The grant and annual fees grow with the size of your plant, because they are charged per MW (or per GWh for supply).
Who can apply
- Companies that want to generate, transmit, distribute or supply electricity. Generation is open to private producers.
