What you need

  • Your national ID or valid passport, original and a copy
  • The minimum opening balance for the account you pick (for example KSh 800 for Bidii, KSh 500 for Akiba)

Steps

  1. By phone: in M-Pesa choose Pay Bill 200999, enter ID plus your ID number as the account number (like ID12345678), deposit from KSh 50 and enter your PIN. Postbank texts you the account number and PIN.
  2. At a branch: bring your original ID or passport and a copy, pick an account and pay the minimum opening balance.
  3. To use mobile banking (*498# or the app), first fill in a registration form at a Postbank branch.

Watch out

  • If you open the account by phone, an ATM card costs KSh 660.
  • An account goes inactive after 6 months without use and dormant after 12 months.
  • Postbank loans are only for pensioners for now.

Who can apply

  • Adults with a national ID or valid passport. The Akiba account is for Kenyans aged 18 and above; there are separate accounts for young savers.
