Steps

  1. Find out what you owe: rates and rent on your property are charged as set out in the County Valuation Roll.
  2. Big parcels are rated per acre each year: the Finance Act lists KSh 8,000 an acre for agricultural land and KSh 10,000 an acre for industrial land.
  3. Pay only through an authorized county channel, such as an appointed county revenue collector.
  4. A genuine county revenue collector carries a county ID card. Ask to see it before you hand over money.
  5. Get an official county receipt for every payment and keep it as proof.

Watch out

  • The county can repossess a county plot if the rent goes unpaid for more than three years in a row.
  • If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
  • Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
  • If the county charges simple interest on late rates, the national law caps it at the Central Bank rate.

Who can apply

  • Owners of land or buildings in West Pokot County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
  • In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
