What you need

  • Filled and signed form KMLTTB/LAB/06A (plus the superintendent approval form)
  • Business registration or incorporation certificate
  • CR12 issued within the last 6 months
  • KRA PIN certificates of the directors or company
  • List of validated equipment, reagents and test kits
  • Your official test menu
  • NEMA-approved medical waste contract or MOU with an incinerator

Steps

  1. On kmlttb.ecitizen.go.ke, apply for 'Application to Operate a Private Medical Laboratory' and upload form LAB/06A with your documents.
  2. KMLTTB reviews your application within 7 days and tells you its status.
  3. If it meets the requirements, pay the inspection fee. KMLTTB then gives you a date and inspects the lab.
  4. If approved, KMLTTB issues the registration certificate within 7 days of the inspectors' final report.
  5. Every year, renew through 'Laboratory Annual License Renewal' on the KMLTTB eCitizen portal.

Watch out

  • Running a lab without the registration certificate and the yearly licence is an offence. You can be fined, jailed or both.
  • If KMLTTB asks for missing information, send it within 14 days or the application is rejected.
  • One professional can be superintendent of only one lab, so each branch needs its own.

Who can apply

  • Any person or company opening a lab, but it must be run by a registered and licensed lab professional as superintendent.
  • The superintendent needs at least 5 years of active practice after KMLTTB registration, and can superintend only one lab.
