Where
By phone, 24 hours a day: KMA Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC), Mombasa Port
Go to KMA

Steps

  1. Call the RMRCC: toll-free 110, or +254 20 8007776, or mobile 0721 368313 or 0737 719414.
  2. Give a clear alert: where you are, what is wrong, how many people are on board and any dangers. Then keep listening for instructions.
  3. Stay visible and together: use lights, signals or anything reflective, keep the group together if it is safe, and save your energy and warmth.
  4. Stay in contact with the rescue centre and do what the rescue teams on scene tell you.

Watch out

  • Before any boat trip, leave the boat's details, the names of everyone on board and your expected departure and arrival times with someone on shore. It makes a search much faster.
  • KMA's Kisumu office covers Lake Victoria (020 8005886, Prosperity Building, Kisumu), but in an emergency call the 24-hour RMRCC lines first.

Who can apply

  • Anyone. The service is free and available 24 hours.
  • Covers the Indian Ocean, Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana and rivers.
