Resign from a political party (or leave one you were registered in without consent)
Office of the Registrar of Political Parties · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Dial *509# or log in to orpp.ecitizen.go.ke and choose to resign from the party. It is free, and it also works if you were registered without your consent. You can instead write to the party and send a copy to the Registrar.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Deadline
- The Registrar must be told within 7 days of the resignation (by the party, you or the Clerk)
- Where
- USSD *509#, online on eCitizen (orpp.ecitizen.go.ke), or by letter to the party and the Registrar of Political Parties
What you need
- By letter: a copy of your resignation letter, received and stamped by the party
- A copy of the national ID or passport you used to register as a voter
Steps
- Dial *509# and follow the prompts to resign from the party you are registered in.
- Or log in to the ORPP portal on eCitizen (orpp.ecitizen.go.ke) and apply to resign.
- Or by letter: give the party written notice. MPs and MCAs also notify the Clerk of their House or County Assembly.
- Send a copy of the notice to the Registrar of Political Parties, with proof the party received it and a copy of your ID or passport.
- The Registrar removes your name from that party's membership list.
Watch out
- Resigning is free. On *509# you pay only the normal subscriber fee (currently KSh 1).
- By letter, your resignation counts from the day the party receives it, so keep the stamped copy.
- Don't rely on the party to tell the Registrar. You can notify the Registrar yourself within 7 days.
Who can apply
- Any registered party member who wants to leave, including people registered by mistake or without consent.
