Become a licensed tax agent with KRA

You need a KRA licence to act as a tax agent. Fill in and sign the application with your PIN, contacts, profession details (or a CV) and your Tax Compliance Certificate number, pay the prescribed fee, and KRA's Tax Agents Committee decides. KRA replies in writing.

- Submit the signed application to KRA (the Commissioner). KRA's page does not list an online channel.
What you need
- Your full names as shown on your ID or passport
- Your KRA PIN details
- Registered or physical address, postal address, phone and email
- Professionals: your profession, professional body and registration number
- Non-professionals: a brief two-page CV of your work experience and qualifications
- Your Tax Compliance Certificate serial number and date of issue
Steps
- Make sure you are tax compliant and have a valid Tax Compliance Certificate, because its number goes on the form.
- Fill in the application, sign it and, if you are a professional, get it endorsed by your professional body. Then submit it to KRA.
- Pay the prescribed application fee.
- KRA's Tax Agents Committee considers your application and KRA tells you its decision in writing.
Watch out
- Running a firm? The licence is issued in the individual names of the proprietors, not the firm's name.
- The licence must be renewed, and a prescribed fee is paid at renewal too.
- KRA can cancel your licence if a return you prepared and filed is false.
Who can apply
- Individuals or partnerships.
- Accountants registered under the Accountants Act who are ICPAK members, or
- Advocates of the High Court with a current practising certificate, or
- Former tax administrators with at least 10 years' experience, or
- People with other qualifications and experience the Commissioner accepts.
- In every case you must be tax compliant.
