Register for and use KRA eTIMS (electronic tax invoices)

Everyone in business, even if not registered for VAT, must issue electronic tax invoices through eTIMS. Small traders can use the free eTIMS Lite: dial *222#, use eCitizen, or get the eTIMS Non VAT app.

What you need
- Your KRA PIN
- The phone number registered on iTax, to receive the sign-up code (OTP)
Steps
- Small business, not VAT registered? Use eTIMS Lite: dial *222#, go to ecitizen.kra.go.ke, or download the eTIMS Non VAT app.
- For the other eTIMS options, sign up at etims.kra.go.ke with your KRA PIN, create a password and enter the code sent to your iTax phone number.
- Log in, click 'Service request', then 'eTIMS', and pick your eTIMS type. You'll get an SMS confirming it.
- Issue an eTIMS invoice for your sales. Anyone can check an invoice by scanning its QR code or using the invoice checker on iTax.
Watch out
- Business costs without an eTIMS invoice can't be deducted for tax, so your customers may insist on one.
- eTIMS software from KRA is free. You only pay if you choose a third-party integrator to link your own system.
- Invoicing on *222# works without internet.

- Everyone carrying on business, including those not registered for VAT
- eTIMS Lite is made for small and micro businesses not registered for VAT
