Do SHA means testing to set your premium (if you are not salaried)
Social Health Authority · sources read 2 Oct 2026
If you are not salaried, do the means-testing self-assessment on afyayangu.go.ke. You answer questions about your income and household, and it gives you your annual SHA premium. If the amount is too high, use the Appeal Means Testing tab.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Online at afyayangu.go.ke
What you need
- Details of your income, work, dependants and household
Steps
- Log in to afyayangu.go.ke and fill in the short means-testing form about your income and household.
- The system works out what you can afford and gives you your annual premium. That is your SHA contribution.
- Think it's too high? Open the Appeal Means Testing tab, submit an appeal and suggest the amount you can pay.
- While you wait for the appeal, pay one month based on the amount you said you can afford.
Watch out
- Whatever your income, the minimum is KSh 300 a month.
- If means testing shows your household can't pay, the government is meant to identify and support poor households.
- Can pay but income is irregular? Premium financing (Lipa SHA Pole Pole) is available.
Who can apply
- People without a salary, for example running a small business, farming or doing gig work
