What SHA covers and how to get treated

Social Health Authority · sources read 30 Sep 2026

Once you're registered with SHA, go to a SHA-contracted facility. Primary care at Level 2, 3 and some Level 4 facilities is free, and emergency, chronic and critical illness care is covered; hospital care at Level 4 to 6 (SHIF) needs your contributions to be up to date.

Fee
We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
How long
No waiting period. You can use services as soon as you're registered.
Where
At any SHA-contracted health facility; check your mapped facility on Afya Yangu
Go to SHA

Steps

  1. Log in to Afya Yangu and open the Health Facility tab under your profile to see the primary care facility you're mapped to.
  2. For free primary care, go to a Level 2 or 3 facility near you. For specialised care, you can visit any facility.
  3. At the facility, confirm who you are with your biometrics. If that fails, a one-time code (OTP) is sent to your registered phone or email.
  4. If you need higher-level hospital care, you're referred to a Level 4 to 6 contracted facility and SHIF pays, as long as you're registered and paid up.

Watch out

  • If your contributions lapse you still get primary care and emergency, chronic and critical illness care, but not SHIF hospital care at Level 4 and above.
  • Some procedures, like certain surgeries, need SHA approval first. SHA gives it within 72 hours.
  • Unpaid SHA penalties can block your access to services until you pay.

Who can apply

  • Registered SHA members and their dependants. There is no waiting period after you register.
  • Primary Health Care Fund: outpatient visits, tests, X-rays, medicines, immunisation, and maternal and child health care.
  • SHIF: hospital stays, surgery, maternity and newborn care, mental health care, kidney care and cancer treatment.
  • Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund: ambulance, accident and emergency treatment, intensive care, and care for long-term (chronic) illnesses.
