Pay your SHA (SHIF) contributions: how much and how
Social Health Authority · sources read 30 Sep 2026
SHA contribution is 2.75% of your gross monthly income, with a minimum of KSh 300 a month. Employers deduct it from salaries; if you are not salaried, SHA sets your amount through means testing and you pay by *147#, afyayangu.go.ke or Paybill 200222 (account: your ID number).
- Fee
- KSh 300Minimum monthly contribution (salaried and non-salaried)
- Deadline
- Contributions are due by the 9th of each month.
- Where
- By *147#, afyayangu.go.ke, M-PESA Paybill 200222 or SHA's banks; employers remit through employers.sha.go.ke
What you need
- Your national ID number (it is the account number when you pay)
Steps
- If you are employed, your employer deducts 2.75% of your gross salary and sends it to SHA. You don't pay separately.
- If you are not salaried, complete the means test on afyayangu.go.ke. It sets your monthly or yearly amount at 2.75% of household income.
- Pay by dialling *147# (select MAKE PAYMENT), by STK push on afyayangu.go.ke, by M-PESA Paybill 200222 with your ID number as the account, or at SHA's banks.
- Can't pay the year at once? Non-salaried members can use Lipa SHA Pole Pole to pay in daily, weekly or monthly instalments.
Watch out
- Late contributions attract a penalty of 2% a month on the unpaid amount until you pay.
- Means-test amount too high? Use the Appeal Means Testing tab on afyayangu.go.ke and pay one month of the amount you said you can afford while you wait.
- For non-salaried households, the income of all earning members is added together and 2.75% is charged on the total.
Who can apply
- All Kenyan households, non-Kenyans living in Kenya for over 12 months, and employers must pay contributions.
