Medical cover for civil servants, teachers, police and prisons officers (POMSF via SHA)

If you're a civil servant, TSC teacher, or police or prisons officer, your employer's medical scheme is run by SHA under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF). Go to a facility on SHA's approved POMSF list; SHA cover is used first, then your scheme, and the hospital can't charge you while your limits last.

Steps
- Find a hospital or clinic on SHA's approved POMSF list on sha.go.ke. Police and prisons officers also have their own contracted-facilities list.
- At the facility, staff check your scheme and eligibility on SHA's system before non-emergency treatment.
- For admission, surgery, costly scans or chronic care, the hospital gets SHA pre-authorisation first.
- Your SHA cover is charged first, then your employer scheme pays within your limits.
Watch out
- The hospital can't charge you or ask for a deposit while your benefit limit isn't used up and your treatment is approved. Emergencies are treated without a deposit.
- At some higher-tier hospitals, TSC cover only applies from Job Group D, and police and prisons cover only for Job Groups M to T.
- What you're covered for, and how much, depends on your employer and job grade.
Who can apply
- Public officers: people appointed by the Public Service Commission to a ministry or state department, staff of the Attorney-General's office, and staff of other public bodies that pay into the Fund.
- Members of the Civil Servants Medical Scheme.
- Teachers employed by TSC.
- Officers of the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service.
