Understand the KNEC grading system (KCSE mean grade and points)
Kenya National Examinations Council · sources read 3 Oct 2026
Your KCSE mean grade comes from 7 subjects: Mathematics, your better language (English or Kiswahili) and your best 5 other subjects, on a 12-point scale from A (12) down to E (1).
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Grades are printed on your KCSE result slip and certificate. The rules are in KNEC's KCSE Regulations.
Steps
- Check your result slip: each subject has a grade from A to E, plus a mean grade and total (aggregate) points for the whole exam.
- Pick the 7 subjects that count: Mathematics, the better of English or Kiswahili, and your best 5 other subjects (the other language counts if it is among those 5).
- Turn each grade into points: A 12, A- 11, B+ 10, B 9, B- 8, C+ 7, C 6, C- 5, D+ 4, D 3, D- 2, E 1. Add the 7 for your aggregate points.
- As a guide, an A means above 79% and an E means below 25% on KNEC's marks scale.
Watch out
- In sciences like Biology, you need at least D+ in the practical paper to get B- or better overall in that subject.
- Repeating fewer than 7 subjects gives you a supplementary certificate. KNEC will not recalculate your first mean grade.
- KNEC diplomas and certificates: if you are referred in a paper and pass the resit, your overall grade is the same as for a first-time candidate.
Who can apply
- Everyone awarded a KCSE certificate is graded on seven subjects.
- Candidates with hearing impairment: Mathematics, the better of English or Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), and the best 5 other subjects.
