Travelling or moving abroad from Kenya: documents

Passport first. Many visas and jobs abroad also ask for a police clearance certificate.

Your checklist. Tick things off as you go; it's saved on this phone only.

  1. 1. If you've never had one. Apply for a Kenyan e-passport (first time) Apply and pay on eCitizen, book an appointment, then take your original ID and birth certificate to your chosen passport centre for biometrics. The passport is usually ready in about 14 working days.
  2. 2. If yours has expired, is full or lost. Renew or replace a Kenyan passport (expired, full, lost or damaged) Apply and pay on eCitizen, book an appointment, then take your ID and old passport to a passport centre for biometrics. For a lost passport you also need a police abstract; a lost or damaged passport costs KSh 20,050.
  3. 3. Often asked for by embassies and employers abroad. Get a Police Clearance Certificate (certificate of good conduct) Apply and pay KSh 1,050 on dci.ecitizen.go.ke, print your C24 form and invoices, then go for fingerprints at a Huduma Centre or DCI Headquarters with your original ID. Download the certificate from eCitizen when you get the SMS.
  4. 4. Some countries ask for it at the border. Get a yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) Get the yellow fever jab at a designated Port Health vaccination point (at selected airports, ports and border points, or other designated facilities) at least 10 days before you travel. Carry a valid ID.
  5. 5. If you take up another citizenship. Declare dual citizenship or regain Kenyan citizenship If you're Kenyan and took another country's citizenship, declare it on the eFNS portal within 3 months (KSh 10,000). If you lost Kenyan citizenship by birth when you became a citizen elsewhere, apply on eFNS to regain it (KSh 50,000).
  6. 6. Emigration benefits, if you're leaving for good. Claim NSSF benefits (retirement, invalidity, survivors, emigration) Take your NSSF card, ID and the documents for your benefit (like a retirement or termination letter and bank details) to your nearest NSSF branch, fill in the form there and submit it in person. It's free, and age or withdrawal benefits take about 10 working days.

Don't include your ID number or KRA PIN. We remove them if you do.
